Advent IM, the UKs leading independent holistic security consultancy welcomed local MP James Morris, to their office and training centre on 20th February.  During the visit, Mr Morris met with members of the team and the firm’s Directors, Julia McCarron and Mike Gillespie and they highlighted the ongoing cyber security skills gap that the UK is experiencing. Mr Morris acknowledged this as a topic he himself was very keen to address with the local college and that he was keen to be a part of the solution to entry level skill building and a career path for young people interested in starting a career in cyber security.

Advent IM Director, Mike Gillespie has discussed the cyber skills gap before he joined Cyber Skills Challenge CEO, Stephanie Daman in a discussion on BBC Radio4 on the topic last year and takes every opportunity to discuss it and raise awareness of the threat that a continuing gulf between UK security needs and the number of available professionals forms. He said, “The youngsters growing up now are using technology in an ever increasing array of ways. The Internet of Things connects people with their information in an unprecedented way, and the workplace and home or leisure increasingly play in the same space. It is vital we get the upcoming generation interested in cyber security, not only as a career path toward being a security professional, which is what the UK plc really needs, but also because security is becoming part of every employees life as their role in organisational security is increasingly acknowledged. We cannot afford to allow our approach to security to remain static; threat and risk to business is a dynamic landscape and we need to develop our talent to deal with this landscape in the same evolved and proactive way. Bringing young people into security via apprenticeships and helping them develop down this route is going to form a vital part of protecting UK plc in years to come.”

Advent IM is keen to explore options for bridging the skills gap in the local community and supporting Mr Morris in the challenge of developing education and training programs that will enable local youngsters become the cyber security experts of the future.

How cyber-attacks affect local and national businesses – The Rt. Hon. James Morris MP visits Midland based experts to find out.

Midland based Cyber/Information Security Consultancy and members of the Malvern Cyber Security Cluster, Advent IM announce a forthcoming visit from Halesowen and Rowley Regis MP, James Morris.

The visit is planned for the Advent IM Offices and Training Centre on February 20th at 11.30am. 5 Coombs Wood Court, Steel Park Road, Halesowen B62 8BF.

This visit will afford Mr Morris the opportunity to understand the impact of cyber security threats to businesses and public bodies in his constituency and their supply chain partners. He will also meet members of the team dedicated to improving organisational cyber security practice both nationally and internationally, through high quality consultancy and training.

Understanding cyber threat and the resultant risk to business is vital in the fight against cybercrime and data loss. Many research papers and surveys have been produced on the topic and if we were to select just one to illustrate the scope of the problem – According to Ponemon Institute research on corporate information security, “Corporate Data: A Protected Asset or a Ticking Time Bomb?” some major issues need to be addressed as a matter of urgency. Some of these include:

  1. 71% of all surveyed users found they had access to information that they shouldn’t have and 4 in 5 of the IT professionals who responded confirmed this poor practice by saying that their organisation did not use a ‘need to know’ data policy.
  2. Almost half of total respondents believed that the Data Protection controls and oversight were weak
  3. Almost 80% of respondents thought it was acceptable to transfer confidential documents to potentially insecure devices.

Segregation of data and appropriate access controls limit what users can find and use and also controls where hackers may be able to move if they actually do manage to gain network access. If end users can see gaps in security as evidenced in point 2, you can guarantee hackers will too.

Point 3 reveals that poor practice, lack of governance and poor or non-existent training are creating a perfect environment for cyber criminals to exploit in order to attack businesses.

If technical security hygiene is also found to be lacking e.g.  out of date and/or unpatched software in use, no effective and updated anti-malware in place, systems and networks untested by regular IT Health Check including penetration testing, then any incursion from outside forces will be successfully executed and organisational information assets will be completely compromised. This can include staff personal information, as it did with the Target breach and that of clients and other supply chain partners.

Managing Director Mike Gillespie said, “Businesses are connected by the internet all over the world; local businesses may have supply chain partners thousands of miles away just as frequently as down the road. Organisations have a responsibility to each other to make sure they are taking adequate precautions both technically and corporately to ensure their information assets are properly secured”

We will be discussing this and other cyber security issues affecting the local community with Mr Morris during his visit.

Francis Maude visits Midlands Cyber Security Firm

The Rt. Hon. Francis Maude MP called in to meet the team at a West Midlands based Cyber Security Consultancy today.

Today, Advent IM was pleased to host a visit by the Rt. Hon Francis Maude MP as part of his remit as the Minister for Cyber Security.

AdventIMMDMikeGillespiewithFrancisMaudeMr. Maude met with co-founders of Advent IM, Mike Gillespie and Julia McCarron, to find out more about the cyber security work the company delivers as the UK’s leading independent information security consultancy, its history, ethos and the challenges they face as an SME.

Topics were wide and varied. Mike Gillespie explained the principles of a holistic and risk based approach to security and Mr Maude was particularly interested in how this translated into solid governance in business. Mr Maude was also keen to find out more about threat convergence and how cyber threats can now impact our physical environments and steps we can take to mitigate those threats.

Francis Maude and Mike Gillespie Copyright Advent IM ltdThe team expanded on Advent IM’s development of cyber security training courses specifically for the Police in the areas of SIRO and IAO responsibilities and accountability, general cyber security awareness training opportunities currently being developed and Advent IM’s mentoring approach to consultancy delivery, ensuring it is seen by those involved as a business enabler.

Mr Maude and the team discussed the merits of the G-Cloud procurement process and how there is room to improve perception that it is more for technology purchases than consultancy, and how Government is starting to drive the requirement for best practice information security and ISO27001 through its outsourced service providers.  Changes to the Government Security Classification scheme and the lack of understanding on its application were touched on, as were the issues faced by local authorities in connecting to PSN and how the latest changes would impact on those connecting or acting as a provider.

Mr Maude also took the time to discuss areas of work with members of Advent staff from our Consultancy, Marketing and Sales teams and the challenges they face with implementing and promoting cyber security within the UK, and spoke to our Business Administration Apprentice on his social media role within the company.

The visit, which lasted approximately an hour, was a privilege to host for Advent IM. “We appreciate the time Mr. Maude has taken to visit us today,” said Advent IM’s Operations Director Julia McCarron. “As Cyber security specialists a number of us have attended events where Mr Maude was present but we rarely have the opportunity to discuss what is happening in the market with him or air our views fact-to-face. To be singled out and given the chance to discuss our company, the industry and involve all of our staff in that forum was an honour for the team.”

Mr Maude thanked everyone for a useful exchange of views and thoughts before departing for his next appointment.
